To many the horseshoe is a symbol of good luck and protection. It has become a superstitious symbol dating back to the blacksmith and his dealings with the devil. The legend goes a wise old blacksmith drew attention from the devil, the devil having hooves decided to get himself shod. The blacksmith shod the devil with red hot shoes, driving the nails deep into the foot. After walking some distance the devil became crippled with pain, and the story goes ever since, whenever the devil saw a horseshoe he turned and fled. Which is why people hang them outside their front door.
Today the symbol is Incorporated into jewellery to protect the wearer and protect them from evil and negative energy.
